e-Sgoil Modern Languages Offer

We are pleased to offer a range of full-year, certificated courses that learners anywhere in Scotland can access.  Languages courses are taught via live, online lessons by GTCS registered e-Sgoil teachers.

The aim of the offer is to help schools create personal pathways for their young people, making courses available where they otherwise wouldn’t be, either due to small numbers, lack of local subject-area expertise or both.  It is intended that this offer can sit alongside the school’s in-house option choices, to be considered along with other timetabled courses.

For National 5 language courses, some experience of the language is an advantage but not essential for entry to the course.

For Higher and Advanced Higher, a pass at National 5 or Higher or equivalent learning is required for entry into the course.

Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

As learners from different schools and local authorities are likely to be together in a cohort, timetabling can be a challenge. Time slots for the delivery of each course will be determined by the constraints on availability of all the participants and the capacity of teaching staff, with a best fit sought to suit as many as possible.

There may be different minimum class sizes depending on the viability constraints for each course. Maximum class sizes will be determined to ensure that the required level of interactivity and access to the teacher can be achieved. It is important that a good quality learning experience is created for all participants. No classes will have more than 30 learners.

There are no costs to any participating schools or individual learners for accessing the courses offered.

Learners will be enrolled with the relevant partner organisation and as such, teaching costs will be covered by the funding received by the partner.

All coordination and advertising, as well as IT support for delivery of live lessons via MS Teams in Glow is provided by e-Sgoil as part of the National e-Learning Offer.

Near the beginning of the course, learners will be supported through the enrolment process for the relevant partner organisation.

Schools are expected to support learners to fully engage with the online lessons and provide a point of contact to discuss progress and any difficulties that arise. They should ensure that learners have suitable equipment, internet connection and a space in the school to allow them to attend and participate in the lessons without undue distraction. It is for the school to determine what, if any, supervision the learner requires while participating.

PC, laptop or other suitable device with a keyboard, speaker, microphone and camera.

A headset with microphone is recommended to ensure the best quality audio experience for everyone.

Language candidates will be presented for the exam by UHI North, West and Hebrides and will sit their final exam in their own school. All assessments, including prelims and the SQA speaking assessment, will take place online with e-Sgoil staff.

For all courses, Insight tariff points will be accrued by the learners school, even though it is not the presenting centre.
